Trucking from the UAE to Saudi Arabia: Crossing the Ghuwaifat–Batha Border Without Delays

NHK Logistics LLC · 5 November 2026 · 8 min read

Most trucks carrying cargo from Dubai to Riyadh, Dammam and the rest of Saudi Arabia cross at Ghuwaifat on the UAE side and Al Batha on the Saudi side. The drive itself is predictable; the time a truck spends at the border is what makes or breaks the delivery date. This guide explains how NHK Logistics prepares a shipment on the Dubai to Saudi Arabia lane so the crossing is a formality, not a delay. For choosing between a full truck and a shared load, read our Dubai to Saudi road freight guide first.

Two customs posts, two declarations

A land crossing is two separate clearances. The UAE side checks and closes the export declaration filed in Dubai; the Saudi side processes a separate import declaration for the same goods. Each side has its own broker, its own system and its own questions. Problems usually come from the two sides seeing different information, so the invoice, packing list and declarations must describe the same goods in the same way.

  • UAE export declaration filed before the truck leaves, through our customs clearance service
  • Saudi import declaration prepared by the consignee's licensed broker
  • Matching invoice, packing list and HS codes on both sides
  • Any conformity certificate or permit the goods need in Saudi Arabia ready before departure

Who handles the Saudi side

Import clearance in Saudi Arabia is done in the name of the importer of record, normally the consignee, through a Saudi customs broker. Agree early who appoints that broker and who pays duty and VAT, as this follows the Incoterm in the sales contract; our Incoterms guide explains how the split works. Share the broker's contact with us before loading so we can send the documents in advance and the declaration is lodged while the truck is still on the road.

Documents that travel with the truck

  • Commercial invoice with clear descriptions, quantities, values and origin of each item
  • Packing list with piece count, gross weights and pallet details
  • Certificate of origin, which matters for duty treatment of GCC-origin goods
  • UAE export declaration reference
  • Product conformity or registration documents where the goods are regulated in Saudi Arabia
  • Driver, truck and trailer documents valid for cross-border transport

Our customs clearance documents guide shows how to prepare the invoice and packing list so descriptions, HS codes and weights line up. Origin-based duty and Saudi product conformity are covered in more depth in our sea freight to Saudi Arabia guide; the same rules apply when goods travel by road.

Loading for inspection

Trucks can be selected for physical or X-ray inspection on either side. A load that is easy to inspect is cleared and resealed faster. That starts at loading in Dubai: pallets stacked and wrapped, each pallet labelled, the packing list in the same order as the load and nothing undeclared in the cab or trailer.

  • Palletised, wrapped cargo with labels that match the packing list
  • Mixed goods grouped by item rather than scattered across the trailer
  • No personal or undeclared goods in the cab
  • Seal numbers recorded and shared with the consignee and broker

If cargo comes from several UAE suppliers, receiving and checking it at our Jebel Ali warehouse before loading lets us match each carton to the paperwork; our multiple suppliers consolidation guide explains the process.

Common causes of border delays

  • Saudi broker not appointed or not sent the documents before arrival
  • Invoice values or descriptions that differ from the declarations
  • Missing certificate of origin or conformity certificate
  • Weights on paper that do not match the weighbridge
  • Regulated goods, such as food, cosmetics or chemicals, shipped without the required approval
  • Trucks arriving at the border close to weekends or public holidays without planning

Plan the timeline backwards

Start from the receiving appointment at the delivery address in Saudi Arabia and work back: unloading time, the drive from Al Batha, border time, the drive from Dubai, loading and the export declaration. Building in a margin for the border is safer than promising the fastest possible transit. NHK Logistics shares milestones at loading, at the UAE exit, at Saudi clearance and on delivery, so both sides know where the truck is. Delivery inside the UAE before departure and collection from suppliers are arranged by our land transport team.

Border crossing checklist

  • Truck type and load (FTL or LTL) confirmed
  • Saudi importer of record and broker confirmed
  • Invoice, packing list and certificate of origin matching each other
  • Any Saudi conformity or product approval in hand
  • Export declaration filed in Dubai
  • Documents sent to the Saudi broker before the truck departs
  • Receiving appointment and unloading arrangements confirmed in Saudi Arabia
